What Do These Indian Olympians Do For Their Living



1. Krishna Poonia:


Krishna Poonia, who represented India in the ongoing London Olympics as one of the star performer among all those who got selected to this prestigious event, ended up in the seventh place in the women’s discus throw event. Though she ended up in the seventh place, she expressed happiness for her good performance in the entire event. Krishna’s recent best personal performance was 64.76 meters that she achieved in Hawaii, United States. This is considered to be the new national record.
When it comes to her personal life, she lives in Jaipur with her husband Virender Singh Poonia, who is also a former athlete. The couple works for Indian Railways to earn their living apart from Poonia participating in training sessions every time. She has also studied Sociology as the major subject at Kanodia Girls College, Jaipur. For her present credit, she is one among the few Indians who entered final round of track and field events.


2. Vijay Kumar:


The current shining star among all the Indian Olympians, ace shooter Vijay Kumar has gained the center of attraction throughout the country after he made India proud by finishing of his campaign by bagging a silver medal in the 25m rapid fire pistol event at the ongoing London Olympics. Vijay hails from Barsar village of the Hamirpur district of Himachal Pradesh. He works for the Indian Army as the Subedar from the past six years and he is the son of former Subedar Banku Ram who also served in the Indian Army before he retired.

Apart from winning silver medal in the ongoing Summer Olympics, he is also recognized for his multiple gold medal win at the Commonwealth games that was held in New Delhi in 2010. Vijay Kumar is also supported by the Olympic Gold Quest initiative started by Indian sports icons Prakash Padukone and Geet Sethi. So, after his achievement in the London Olympics he has all the chances of getting a job at the Sports Authority of India [SAI] at the IAS officer’s level.



3. Sushil Kumar:


The Bronze medal winner at the Beijing Olympic Games, Sushil Kumar got the prestigious chance of leading the Indian contingent at the ongoing London Olympics and was also the India’s flag bearer on the opening ceremony on July 27th. The latest best achievements of Sushil were at the 2010 World Wrestling Championships where he created history after becoming the first Indian Wrestler to win a Gold medal and he also bagged another gold medal at the 2010 Commonwealth games.


Sushil comes from Baprola village in the South West Delhi and is currently serving for the Indian Railways as the Assistant Commercial Manager. Remaining calm and composed for the games might be the motto for his success. He has also won Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, which is considered to be the highest honor given to any Indian sportsperson.



4. M.C. Mary Kom:


Mangte Chungneijang Mary Kom [Mary Kom], the five times World Boxing Champion has already assured a medal for India at the London Olympics after being the only woman boxer representing India over there. She is representing India as the World No.4 boxer at the 51 kg category. She is considered to be the only woman boxer to have won a medal in all the six World Championships.


Though she was interested in boxing from the time she was young, she tried hiding her interest towards the sport as she thought that boxing game was not suitable for a woman. But after her victory in the Manipur state women’s boxing championship in the year 2000, her interest towards boxing became public. After competing in few of the regional championships, she started participating in international events at the age of 18 years. Apart from concentrating only on her boxing career, she is also at present serving as the Deputy Superintendent of Police in the State of Manipur from 2010.



5. Valiyaveetil Diju:


Valiyaveetil Diju, is the Indian Badminton player who comes from Kozhikode, Kerala. Along with his doubles partner Jwala Gutta, they are at present ranked to World No. 13 mixed-doubles pair by the Badminton World Federation. He also represented India in the badminton mixed-doubles category alongside his partner Jwala Gutta. But this pair lost in the very first match of their Olympics match at the Wembley Arena within 25 minutes. Diju has also got the credit of being four time National mixed-doubles champion. He is also the bronze medalist at the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games. Diju and Jwala have the credit of becoming the first mixed-double badminton pair to have won the Grand Prix Gold title after the won the Chinese Taipei Grand Prix on August 30th 2009.


He got into this sport by representing Calicut University at the All India University Championships. At present he is currently serving as the HR Manager at the ONGC, Chennai as reported on Wikipedia.
